The requirement, in plain terms

• Under Assembly Bill 943, effective January 1, 2026, California no longer requires the 20 hours of line-specific prelicensing coursework before the Life exam that it previously did.
• The 12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course is still required before the license can be issued.
• The Life agent exam itself is 75 multiple-choice questions with a 90-minute time limit, and a 70% passing score.
• The Department administers exams at its Los Angeles site or through PSI Services test centers statewide.

Why removing a coursework requirement raises the stakes on self-study

Fewer required hours of line-specific coursework does not mean less material on the exam — it means less structured, mandatory time built into your path to cover it. If you're licensing under the post-AB 943 rules, you're relying more heavily on self-study and practice questions to reach exam-day readiness than a candidate was a year earlier, since the state no longer builds that instruction into the process by default.

Where to focus practice time

With a 90-minute, 75-question exam, you have about 72 seconds a question with room to review — tight enough that pacing practice matters, not just content review. Because the ethics and insurance code course remains mandatory, treat it as more than a formality: exam questions on ethics and California-specific rules are closed-book facts, and they respond to repetition and self-testing far better than to a second read of the course material.
