Florida's path to a resident life insurance license runs through the state's Department of Financial Services, and it has a shape that catches some candidates off guard: a real prelicensing hour requirement, and a passing exam score that does not stay valid forever.

The requirement, in plain terms

• A Resident Life license (including annuities and variable contracts) requires a 30-hour life and variable contracts prelicensing course, completed within four years of applying.
• A passing exam score is valid for one year from the date you earn it. If you don't complete the licensing process within that year, you have to retake and pass the exam again.
• Some applicants who held an equivalent license in a reciprocal state may be exempt from the prelicensing course, but still have to pass Florida's exam.

Why the one-year clock changes how you should study

A one-year window after passing sounds generous, but it means the real risk isn't failing the exam — it's passing it and then letting the license application slip for over a year, which forces a retake. Once you've scheduled your exam date, treat the weeks right before it as your only real study window, and go in ready to pass on the first attempt rather than planning on a second try.

Where to focus practice time

Florida's exam draws on the same six broad areas most life licensing exams do: policy types and features, riders and provisions, underwriting and delivery, retirement and annuity concepts, general ethics and rules, and Florida-specific statutes and regulations. The first four are conceptual and reward understanding; the last two are closed-book facts about Florida rules specifically, and no national study guide will hand those to you by default. Drill those two sections with repetition, not rereading — you either know the rule or you don't.
