Why Practice Questions Beat Rereading the Manual

InsuranceExam Prep

There is a trap in how studying feels. The second time you read a chapter it goes down smoother than the first. The third time it feels almost obvious. That smoothness reads as progress, so people keep rereading.

What actually improved is fluency with the text. The exam does not ask you to recognize a paragraph. It asks you to pull an answer out of nothing, with four options designed to look close to each other.

The difference in one sentence

Recognition is being shown something and knowing you have seen it. Recall is being asked something and producing it. Rereading trains the first. Practice questions train the second.

What to do with a wrong answer

A wrong answer is worth more than a right one, but only if you stop long enough to sort it. Most wrong answers fall into three kinds, and each means something different.

  • You did not know the material. Go learn it. This is the honest one and the easiest to fix.
  • You knew it but misread the question. Usually a qualifier you skipped, like except, not, or a time limit buried in the stem.
  • You narrowed it to two and picked wrong. This is the most useful kind, because it means the distinction between those two options is the thing you have not nailed down yet.

If you never sort them, every miss looks the same and you end up restudying material you already knew.

Track the misses, not the hours

Hours studied is a comfortable number that does not predict much. A far better one is whether the same topics keep showing up in your wrong answers week over week. If they do, the study method is not working on that topic, and more hours of the same will not change it.
